Basmata was a weekend parish for the then Prefect Apostolic, Mgr. Urban McGarry in 1956. Rain or shine, Mgr. Urban McGarry paid visit to Basmata on weekends and gradually started the mission. The first baptism in Basmata was of Mr. Barnabas Soren of Kusaha on December 24, 1958. Many sick were brought to Bhagalpur by Monsignor and taken care of. As the Catholics increased, a plot of land was acquired and a Church was constructed. Immediately after his consecration as a Bishop in 1965, Bishop Urban McGarry TOR appointed Rev. Fr. Dennis Kiro TOR as the first resident priest of Basmata. Recently three of the substations have been upgraded to Parishes. They are Bodhgaya, Srinagar, and Hasalgoda. |
