Rev. Frs. Westropp and Miller were the pioneer Jesuit missionaries at Gajhi, Chakai from 1928. They wanted to establish a mission center at Pojha. But, as no land was available in Pojha, Rev. Fr. Miller went a little further to Gajhi- Gadhara and acquired 204 acres of land and made a house. Even now many people call Chakai mission as ‘Gajhi mission’. In 1944, Rev. Fr. Morrison came to Gajhi mission. He was not ready to travel by road to Gajhi, where he had to cross two rivers and ride motor cycle on slushy roads. Rev. Fr. Morrison, therefore, bought a piece of land near Chakai market close to Deoghar-Giridih road and stayed there. He made a huge Church in the shape of a Santal hut. Rev. Fr. Morrison brought CSST Sisters from Giridih to aid him out in this mission. Staying in his house eventually, Rev. Fr. Westropp became a close associate of that family. Suku Hembrom, the Manjhi, became a Christian and later became the first catechist of Chakai. Three more parishes have been carved out of the old Chakai Mission: Bhalua, Dulampur and Gajhi-Gadhara. |
