In 1959, Rev. Fr. Alexander Bombera TOR acquired land for Charkapathar mission from a protestant Pastor. He in turn had purchased it from the American Baptist Missionaries. There was a Bunglow in the land built with 25 inch thick mud wall and the roof was 16 feet high and it was thatched with “Sauri” Grass, an ideal house to live in summer. For the winter, there was a fire-place in the Parlour where fire kept the residents warm. On one winter night, Fr. Alex was enjoying the warmth of the fire when a spark from the chimney oven went up and burned the total roof. There is a record showing that Rev. Fr. Maurice Buckly was there in 1962-63 and Rev. Fr. Alexander Bombera from 1963. The Church was blessed in 1964. The Holy Family Sisters came to Charkapathar in 1964 which was their first Mission in the North. The new Parish Church was blessed by Late Bishop Thomas Kozhimala on June 27, 2006. Charakapathar has about 1680 Catholics and 300 families in 40 villages. |
