Godda has a true copy of a document dated August 21, 1889 transferring certain landed properties from the diocese of Allahabad to the Archdiocese of Calcutta. But it was all abandoned except the present mission property which the Patna Jesuits occupied in 1930. The priests’ house was built by Rev. Fr. Ernest SJ, in 1940. Rev. Fr. A. Pettit SJ, was the first resident priest who baptized the first Santhal Christian on October 26, 1930. The old presbytery was built by Rev. Fr. Ernest in 1940 and it was the only presbytery made of brick and mortars other than the Bhagalpur presbytery constructed by Capuchins in 1812. Rev. Fr. Gregory Kuttickal was the first diocesan parish priest in Godda. It was Rev. Fr. George Thymoottil who bought a piece of land and constructed a school named “Santom Academy”. The history of Patna Jesuits says that there were 60 children in the boarding of Bhagalpur in the year 1929-30. Baromasia and Sundermore were the substations of Godda. In 1930 there was a cemetery in the mission compound. Holy Mass was offered in an enclosed part of the veranda of the presbytery. As the number of Christians increased, a broad veranda was attached with asbestos roof to the room in which Mass was offered. The present church was built in 1982 by Rev. Fr. Thomas Kozhimala. In 1996 Rev. Fr. Varghese Azhakath constructed the new presbytery. Late Fr. Thomas Kozhimala changed the name of “Santom Academy” to “St. Thomas English Medium School, Godda”. |
