Dakaita parish had a substation at Mohanpur. There were number of Christians in and around Mohanpur village. By reading the signs of the time, a chapel was made by the efforts of Fr. Gregory Kuttikal, the then parish priest of Dakaita. About two kilometres away from Mohanpur, at Govindpur village, Bhagalpur Diocese started an English Medium School to provide quality education for the tribal children of the area. Late Bishop Thomas Kozhimala had initiated the acquisition of land but after his unexpected death, Bishop Kurien was passionate in developing this school. Govindpur was raised to a parish in 2000. Mohanpur became its substation. Every Sunday, Holy Mass is offered in the School hall. On alternative Sundays Mohanpur Christians have Mass in Mohanpur. There are 378 Catholics, in eight villages. A number of Christians reside over here to work in the Rajmahal Colliery, the biggest in Asia. Rev. Fr. George Vanmelil is the founder principal of St. Thomas School, Govindpur. He began Boarding Houses for both boys and girls, catering to about 540 children. He was the first parish priest, followed by Rev. Fr. Marianus Kisku of happy memory, who died of heart attack in Govindpur. Sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament support the Parish Priest in the pastoral as well as educational apostolate. Fr. Jacob Thekkeparampil is the present Parish Priest and Principal of Govindpur. |
