On the Bhagalpur- Jamui road, some 70 km from Bhagalpur is the Kharagpur Nazri Mission which was handed over to the diocese from Patna in 1984. Rev. Fr. Snyder SJ (in Jamalpur) had a mission territory of 2000 Sq Km outside the Jamalpur town.

Rev. Fr. Snyder used to visit Nazri village and stay in the Bind tola to spread his mission work. It was John Kenelly SJ, assistant to Rev. Fr. Snyder in Jamalpur, who bought the land in Nazri village for a mission in 1964.

A house was constructed as a church having a long hall with a sacristy behind and on either side long verandas. The priest used to reside in the sacristy. There was a school in the hall and the open verandas were the boarding.

Rev. Fr. Devasia Mattathilany, who was posted here in the early 70’s, was a social liberator. He worked for the people, particularly the Santals, to release their land from the Land- Lords. The Land-Lords took revenge on him by beating up and vandalising the whole parish house and property. In the early years, many Harijans were baptized.

The baptism register shows about 900 entries but the census taken by a Bhagalpur Missionary in 2000 states that there were only 21 catholic families and about 63 catholics in the Parish. Before Bhagalpur Diocese took over, there was a group of CTC Sisters working in Nazri village. After about 10 years working with Bhagalpur missionaries, the sisters closed the convent. Later, St. Ann’s from Kolkata collaborated in the mission for some time.
