It was in Siripur that the Patna Jesuits first started their work among the Santals. The first mud church built by them was demolished by the British Government as the law forbade foreigners to build any church in the tribal land. Later, the Church was reconstructed in Baccha but it was taken care from Gokhla. In 1941, Gokhla was handed over to Franciscans by Jesuits. With the quitting of the British in 1947, the Franciscans worked more fervently in the tribal areas. They sent Rev. Fr. Thaddeus Mudri TOR as a resident Priest in Baccha in 1950, who made a residence and a prayer hall in Baccha. In 1970’s Rev. Fr. Mathew Chennatt started a school in a thatched roof of palm leaves. There were 20 children who were also provided with food such as ‘bulgur’ and milk powder. When the number of children reached 190, he contacted CTC Sisters in Gokhla who accepted his invitation and started a convent. The Church built by Rev. Fr. James Alumkal was blessed on November 17, 1976. Baccha Mission takes care of 1612 Catholics from 28 villages. Kusumba and Dhanbasa have been carved out from Baccha and made independent parishes. |
