A Boy named Shiva Shankar, from the village Saurichakla was attending school in Dumka. Shiva Shankar was of Oraon tribe and a non-Christian. While Shiva Shankar was in Dumka, an oraon priest Leo Tigga of Ranchi was ordained as the first Bishop of Dumka in Santhal Pargana. Shiva Shankar met the Oraon Bishop and expressed his desire to become a Christian. Then the Bishop directed him to meet the father at Dakaita for instruction prior to Baptism. On learning that Shiva Shankar is from a village close to Dakaita and the parish priest there, is Fr. Antony Xalxo TOR, an Oraon Priest, Bishop Leo Tigga introduced Shiva Shankar to Fr. Xalxo and he baptized Shiva Shankar and he changed his name from Shiva Shankar to Peter Paul. Fr. Antony Xalxo was the first priest to step into Saurichakla village, which is predominantly Oraon but there are also Santhal villages in the region. When a few Oraons became Christians, Missionaries of Charity Sisters from Bhagalpur started visiting them and eventually in 1977, they established their convent in this village. The Parish Priest of Dakaita occasionally visited the sisters and the people. Fr. John Hembrom was appointed the parish priest of Saurichakla in 1981. There are both Oraon and Santhal Catholics. Besides the MC Sisters, Ursuline Sisters are also rendering their service to the mission. This parish comprises of a Middle School, High School and hostels for boys and girls. A spacious church and a hostel were built by Fr. Lucas Arulappa. It was while constructing the hostel building that an 11 year old girl fell down from a Jamun tree and an iron rod pierced through her chest and stomach. Fr. Lucas and the sisters carried her to Bhagalpur Medical College and then to Patna, where she had a miraculous survival. The service rendered to her and the constant prayer and support of the faithful of Saurichakla influenced her family and others from the region to accept Christianity. |
