In 1966, a plot of land with a residence was found available for sale at the Kachahri Chowk, but it was considered to be a haunted place. The Diocese bought it and the name of the residence was named “Shanthi Niwas”. The house was renovated and was called St. Benedict’s after the name of the benefactor who sponsored for it. From 1968, St. Benedict’s was the location for the office of the Bishop and was called “The Chancery Office”. The Church services were conducted in a small room on the ground floor. After the ministry of the first two Parish Priests, Rev. Fr. Sebastian Aykara and Rev. Fr. Thomas Ananiurumpel TOR, Rev. Fr. Joseph Thanniparampil became the Parish Priest and procurator of the diocese in 1971. It was during his time the spacious Church at the City Parish was constructed. The new Church of St. Benedict was blessed by Rev. Fr. Gregory Kuttickal, the then Vicar General in 1975. Later the Chancery Office was shifted to a new location, at Nawab Colony in 1980. At present, Rev. Fr. Thomas N.M, Vicar General, is the Parish Priest and the Director of Joseph Institute of Computer Education. A new, spacious and magnificent church is under construction. |
