As early as 1935, a Jesuit Priest, Rev. Fr. Benny, was a resident here. The Australian Jesuits used to visit Naokonia and Chalkari in the 1960s. It was in Pirtand that Christianity began in the district of Giridih. The remnants of the presbytery at Pirtand are still visible. In 1973-1974, the then Parish Priest of Giridih, Rev. Fr. Scaria Kollerette, visited Pirtand. He bought a piece of land at Chirki village in 1975. He built a convent for the Clarist Sisters. The Sisters began to extent their support and service. Late Fr. Augustine Neerampuzha TOR was the first resident priest, who lived at first in a garage and later built a small house with a tin roof. Late Rev. Fr. Abraham Kadanthott was the first diocesan priest at Chirki in 1983. The Church building of St. Peter began by Late Rev. Fr. Kandanthott which was completed by Rev. Fr. Julius Marandi (Bp. of Dumka) and blessed on June 29, 1986. At present, there is a Middle School, boarding houses for boys and girls, and a dispensary. |
