A Christian presence is felt in this area from the 17th century. Meghi and Daherlangi are two important villages in the parish of Mangra. In 1930, these villages had the presence of Jesuits who preached the Good News here. Daherlangi had a village chapel and it was here many of the first Christians were baptized. As the Franciscans took over Gokhla from the Jesuits, they transferred the village chapel to Mangra. The chapel was where the present school is situated. Rev. Fr. Alex Bombera TOR made a pucca church building with an attached room. The first parish priest of Mangra, late Rev. Fr. Abraham Kadanthott lived in this room. During famine a lot of grain was given to Mangra and they had to store it in the Church. The CRS, who sent relief materials, also sent sufficient fund for a godown. The number of Christians increased. Later when Late Rev. Fr. Scaria Kollerette was the parish priest, he expanded the Church building, without demolishing the existing one. As the number of students increased in the school, a bigger School building was built. The Primary School became a High School today, with above 1000 students. |
