Since 1989 Nerhatari was a mass certre of Nipania mission which was looked after by Late Bishop Thomas Kozhimala, when he was the Rector of St. John's Regional Minor Seminary, Bhagalpur, he used to go to Nipania mission every weekends to cater the spiritual needs of the people of both Nipania and Nerhatari. He was always accompanied by Minor Seminarians who helped him in his pastoral works. Bishop Thomas Kozhimala with his missionary zeal braved all the difficulties in spreading the word of God in these remote areas. Through his constant visits and untiring works he established Nipania as a mission station and Nerhatari as a mass center in the subsequent years. Bishop Thomas Kozhimala managed to get a piece of land in Nerhatari where he built a mud house with thatched roofs to conduct holy mass for the faithful of the area. Nerhatari falls under Banka district and it is about 18 km away from district head quarters. When Rev. Fr Thomas Kozhimala became the Bishop of Bhagalpur Diocese, Nipania and Nerhatari were put under the pastoral care of Banka Mission. Fr. Joseph Thanniparampil and Fr. Thomas N.M who were parish priests of Banka took care of Nerhatari for many years until 2006 when late Fr. Samuel Murmu was appointed as a residing Asst. priest, Nipania still being attached to Banka. Fr. Vincent Murmu and Fr. Masidas also stayed in Nipania as residing assistant Parish Priests untill Fr. Patrick Hansdak was appointed as its first parish priest in 2013.

In 2014, Fr. Bravinth, the Parish Priest of Banka purchased 4 acres of land for the further development and evangelization of Nerhatari. Later in 2016, Nerhatari was bifurcated from Nipania Parish and raised it to the status of a Parish and

Fr. Patrick Hansdak was appointed as its administration.

Nerhatari parish has 215 catholics spread about in many villages.
